Puff Pieces: April ‘23
Puff Pieces is a once-monthly round-up of the hottest drops in pot. This time, we’re taking a look at how this year’s 4/20 has changed the landscape.
Session x WeedFeed’s Designer Series II Bong in Glow
The Session bong is one of the prized few in my regular rotation. A simple piece with the ability to pack a big hit, this bong stands out thanks to its brightly colored silicone boots and grommets to protect the glass from the areas most susceptible to breakage — while still making a bold color statement (I personally have celery, horizon, and moonlight to keep things fresh). This classic aesthetic first diverged with their original Designer series last 4/20, when the brand released models of the classic body in frosty white and smokey black with accessories to match.
This year, the Designer Series II was launched in collaboration with WeedFeed — a highly popular weed-themed Instagram turned empire. Now, the shade is a neon lime green whose accessories actually glow in the dark. As a huge proponent of both sticky ceiling stars and the planet of Chromatica, I approve of the vision. The brand has now revealed that the Designer Series is a recurring line that challenges their traditional style in terms of color, mediums, and glass-blowing techniques. Personally? I’d be interested to see a piece outfitted with a percolator to increase smoothness — or a Barbie pink bong. That would work too.
The Designer Series II Bong in Glow is available for $285.
Robert Mickelsen’s Moai Recycler
Robert Micklesen is an incredible glass artist who makes pieces that are showcased in fine art galleries across the country — and also bongs. He first released the rendering of the Moai Recycler on Instagram to much fanfare; so much so, in fact, that he created a prototype and, then, a ready-to-purchase product. The bubbler shines in both form and function, with the body of the pipe resembling the faces of the Easter Island mega-statues. The “recycler” portion comes into play as you take a hit: the water flows through the body before settling in a glass orb above that slowly trickles water back to the base, meaning there’s no chance of getting bong water anywhere near your mouth.
This is certainly an investment piece at $1,000, but if you’re in the art world it’s a beautiful (and functional) medium to explore for your collection.
Edie Parker Flower’s Balloon Pipe
Another delightfully whimsical release from Edie Parker Flower, the balloon pipe was dropped alongside super cute birthday candle-shaped one-hitters to bring the party to the sesh. The red variant is my personal favorite — not because of my love for demon clowns, but because I don’t often see glass in such a bold color: amber, teal, pink, and purple seem to be the most popular. I would personally save this one for decorative use only unless you’ve got an iron lung; a hit from one of these babies will be rich, milky, and raw.
The balloon pipe is available for $95.
Fake Cakery’s Matcha Swiss Roll Joint Case
Fake Cakery, an Instagram darling known for its faux cakes turned grinders, dropped joint cases that look good enough to eat as a part of their 4/20 release, with my favorite being the matcha swiss roll. Other adorable offerings included the chocolate eclair, lemon meringue, and many more.
If you don’t have a truly reusable doob tube by now, you need one — plastic need not apply. Designer doob tubes are often only offered in a metal finish, but I love how hyper-cute FakeCakery has made this variety without compromising on function.
You can find the Matcha Swiss Roll Joint Case for $35 (sold out at time of writing).
Burning Love’s Emotional Support Water Bong
This one might require a double-take: this water bottle doppelganger is actually a fully glass bong in disguise. Perfect for travel, this piece was dropped as a part of the brand’s Spring Break collection early in the month alongside other nostalgic bits of MTV history.
I love how easily portable and truly discreet this piece is while still being all-glass and easy to clean — many portable bong offerings are often silicone or metal and, frankly, pretty gross. The best part? The break in opacity in the middle reveals an inner chamber that lets you see exactly how much you’re ripping.
The Emotional Support Water Bong is available for $68.
After a massive drop day like 4/20, the cannacessories industry can be slow to trickle out new releases in the months following — tune back in for May’s Puff Pieces next month to see how they fare.
